Things To Do In London

September 11, 2018

Although I have been to London many times, I have to say it is just as mesmerising every time. If you are need of a mini break or there is a reason to go to this beautiful city, there are always things to see and do. This is what I got to during my time away.

Tower of London:

Fun facts:

  • Building began in 1078
  • Historic castle located on the Thames
  • The castle was a prison from 1100 to 1952
  • The Tower has served as an armoury, treasury, menagerie, the home of the Royal Mint, a public record office, and the Crown Jewels of England

The Tower of London has centuries of history within its concrete walls, which has remained on display for all to see. This is one of the best places to uncover the history of the country, spanning from medieval times, to the Tudors, right up to the rule of Queen Victoria and our current monarch, Elizabeth II. Restoration of the building has kept the clear essence of the building, making it very informative. Personally my favourite part were the inscriptions on the wall of imprisoned Catholics, who even were going through physical and emotional torment still held onto their faith. Hours could be spent at the castle, hence worth the trip.

Trafalgar Square:

Such a beautiful spot of the city, Trafalgar Square is a must. Built in 1805, it is a celebration of Lord Horatio Nelson against Napoleon at the Battle of Trafalgar. Situated within the square is a column of Nelson himself, and the notorious 4 lion sculptures. The square also contains the National Gallery and other works of art, both old and new.

The Shard

Fun Facts:

  • The Shard is the tallest building in the United Kingdom, the tallest building in the European Union, the fifth-tallest building in Europe and the 96th-tallest building in the world.
  • There are 72 habitable floors, with a viewing gallery at the top.
  • It took 3 and a half years to build, completed in 2012.

Now I am not scared of heights but blimey is this building tall. After security checks, the first lift will take you to floor 34, where a second lift will take you to floor 69. On this floor there is a 360 degree view of the city. If you want to go even higher, there are stairs to take you to floor 72, which is an open air sky deck. If you are ever in London, I cannot recommend this enough, the view was simply stunning.

St James’s Park

Fun Facts:

  • Established in 1603
  • 57 Acres

Right by Buckingham Palace, St. James’s Park is such a lovely place for a stroll. In these beautiful landscapes are beautiful flower beds, pelicans, guards museum, lakes and stunning views of both Buckingham Palace and the London Eye.

When in London, it is always great to be able to visit the national museums and find out more about both the country and human and animal development. During my visit, I went to both the British Museum (containing the Rosetta Stone) and the Natural History Museum, containing the well renowned dinosaur collection. These are a definite must if you ever visit the city.

Other Places:

  • Tube Stations – If ever in the city, the underground is definitely the travel mode of choice. Fast and efficient, these trains will get you across the city in no time.
  • Buckingham Palace – The residence of Queen Elizabeth II, Buckingham Palace is a must when visiting London.
  • Oxford Street – Also known as shopping central. Perfect to pick up a little souvenir.

In all honesty, the best parts of London are the ones that are free, the views are simply amazing, both natural and man made structures. I will never get sick of visiting this wonderful city.

Have you visited London? What would you recommend seeing?
