Pizza is one of my favorite any day of the week meals. It is hard to go wrong with a meal that covers all the food groups and can be eaten with your hands. As much as I adore pizza, I do tire of the traditional tomato sauce, cheese, meat, veggie routine. To excite my taste buds, I enjoy adding specialty pizzas into the mix. Do not fear, you do not need expensive take out to accomplish this flavor goal. You can easily do it at home.
What can go on a pizza?
With a little imagination, any number of specialty pizzas can appear on your dining room table this weekend. Truly, there is very little that can not be put on a pizza. Just find your favorite flavor combinations and move on from there. One of our favorites is my Ultimate Cheeseburger Pizza. This delicious concoction was inspired by the McDonald’s Big Mac and is full of delicious flavors.
Where to start
The first step to making pizza at home is the crust. There are quite a few options depending on your level of comfort in the kitchen. I use the Pizza Crust Recipe from Betty Crocker or the Pizza Dough Recipe from Cuisinart. There are also many options in the refrigerator or freezer section of your local grocery store. If you are in a really adventurous mood, some of your favorite pizza places may sell their dough. Pick the option that works best for you.
I also recommend buying a pizza pan to add to your kitchen arsenal. I prefer a pan with holes to help the dough bake evenly. Click here for my favorite pan. A pizza stone is another option. I have used them in the past, but do not currently have one in my arsenal. The pans are easier to clean and less breakable, so they work better for my current place in life.
Time for the Toppings
To put together the Ultimate Cheeseburger pizza, you will need a pound of hamburger, browned and drained, your favorite shredded cheese, Thousand Island dressing, and dill pickle slices. The type of cheese is completely your choice. We use Colby Jack, as it is our favorite cheese for everything. If you don’t want to buy Thousand Island dressing because you won’t use it for anything else, it is super simple to make. Take one cup mayo, two tablespoons ketchup, and two tablespoons sweet pickle relish and voila you have your dressing.
Putting it All Together
Preheat the oven to 425°F. Using a rolling pin or your hands, stretch dough into a round to fit pan. Don’t worry about perfection, pizza tastes delicious in any shape. Using a fork, poke holes throughout the dough. This eliminates air bubbles and keeps your pizza flat while baking. Bake the dough for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and cover dough with Thousand Island dressing. Then layer ground beef on top of sauce. Cover with cheese and arrange dill pickle slices on top. Bake for 10 more minutes or until cheese is fully melted. Cut, plate and serve!
Ultimate Cheeseburger pizza is one of my favorite at home pizzas. To get your imagination flowing, I also make a BBQ chicken pizza and a Spinach Artichoke pizza. I am telling you, everything goes on top of pizza dough. I also continue to make traditional pizza, keeping pizza night anything but boring. Next time you feel like trying something new, take a chance on Ultimate Cheeseburger pizza. You may find at home pizza becomes your favorite pizza. Happy Cooking!
