This is a guest post from the lovely Merry from Monodreme , who shares her experience of Christmas in Bali and her favourite things about Christmas!
I’ve always had a sense of excitement and joy over Christmas. I love the lights, the decorations, pretty gift wrapping, and last is the Christmas tree. Those are just small reasons why I love Christmas!
Well, it’s official Christmas soon!
With all things happening this year, I feel like Christmas coming so soon, creeps up on us quicker and quicker. I have mixed feelings about that because obviously, I love Christmas so I love that it’s so close but also it feels like the Christmas season passes so quickly that I hardly get time to enjoy it.
No matter where in the world you are, there’s an energy of thinking about a family in whatever definition of the word that means most to you. As if we give ourselves permission to pause and let go of any hurt, anger, or frustration we have and simply practice gratitude at the moment.
As I’ve already said in this post and to my friends this month, I love Christmas, but why? What about Christmas makes it my favorite time of year?

The Vibe
First, I love the vibe. I live in Bali, spend Christmas in Bali, and I am Balinese – or you can say my religion is Hindu. Balinese don’t celebrate Christmas, of course. I thought it began several years ago when I saw with my own eyes (and started to understand) what Christmas looks like every year. The vibe, the music, the gifts, so on.
I always anticipated it more than any non-Balinese ceremonial day. I have many Christian friends and always ask them to send me their Christmas tree photos!
Everyone can celebrate Christmas, no matter what religion you have.
Regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas or not, the end of the year itself has a magical pull to it. The closing of a chapter and the beginning of something new and fresh. Everyone is becoming more ‘festive’ in their own ways.
The Cookies
Another reason why I love Christmas is because of the cookies. When Christmas came every year, my family and I visited my Christianity neighborhood and friends. They have a lot of various cookies that I love. Every cookie is delicious and sweet – my favorite taste. I like them all. I don’t have cookies that I don’t like because I always eat them all!
We don’t visit our Christianity friends so often, so it’s a good time to meet, talk, and enjoy our time together with a bunch of cookies and sweet syrup during Christmas.
Christmas Tree
The next one is a Christmas tree! My favorite one and the biggest reason why I love Christmas.
Early this month, I like to go out only to see Christmas trees outside of church, restaurants, or small shops in Sanur, Seminyak, or Kuta area. They create it so beautifully – no matter if it’s a big or small Christmas tree! The mix of green and red colors always looks so lovely in my eyes.
I will drive so slow only to enjoy the sight and that’s not even make me bored to see the tree every time, in any place. It only makes me smile more and more. There’s something that makes me happy just by looking at the ornaments and the lights.
The Lights
The final reason I love Christmas so much is because of the lights. Clearly, I am all about my comfort and feeling cozy, and string lights give me that comfort. There is really nothing I love more than driving outside and seeing all the string lights lining all the hotels, malls, or restaurants.
There is this sense of warmth and love when you travel through your neighborhood and see all the lights people have strung. I especially love when I can see the Christmas tree with the wrapping gifts when I eat with someone I love.
That’s all. That’s why I love Christmas so much. If I’m being honest whether it’s the lights, the Christmas tree or something completely different there are plenty of reasons to love Christmas day.
What is your favorite thing about the Christmas season? Is it the cookie? The Christmas tree? Is it spending time with your family? Let me know in the comments!
Also, leave me your favorite family tradition at the holiday’s down in the comments, I would absolutely love to hear from you guys.
Stay safe wherever you are and have a wonderful Merry Christmas and New Year!
