£6,000+ pp A Year For Accommodation? Third Year University House Tour

September 12, 2019

We all know how expensive university accommodation can be, especially when venturing out of halls of residence. Saving money as a student is so important! This flat is more pricey than the standard offered (I am aware), but after a place without functioning central heating the year before, the splurge was well worth it. Although my place isn’t 100% complete, it is already starting to feel like home, so I thought I would offer a third-year University House tour for all of those that like a little snoop (myself included).

General Info:

  • Has two bedrooms (flat for 2)
  • New build
  • Flat over 2 floors – We have no neighbours so have private entry (which is gated)
  • 2 Ensuites
  • Two double beds
  • 12-minute walk to the University
  • £145 a week (water, tv license and internet included, £250 electricity allowance)

Front Entrance

By our front door, we have a little shoe rack from Dunelm, which really makes the place feel like home.

Lewis has put this photo of me here as he knows there is no possible way I can reach it, so I guess that’s where its staying!

Kitchen

What I love so much more about my accommodation this year to last is that the kitchen is separate from the living room. This makes it a lot easier to contain smells and allows for an amazing hosting space.

In terms of furnishing the place, it is newly refurbished so everything is brand new – which made it very easy when it came to decorating. The kettle and toaster are from Wilko, and the microwave was a hand me down from my parents. As I have passed down my old Russell Hobbs knife block to my Mum, I have replaced it with a new magnetic one (£19.99) and purchased a spice rack from B&M (£9.99). We have a storage cupboard in the kitchen to store the hoover, carrier bags and storage items. Also included in the kitchen is an integrated washing machine and dishwasher.

For the dining table, we have added a collection of both slate and normal place mats, for weekday and fancy meals.

Living Room

We were both so shocked when we saw how big our living room was, for 2 people I swear it’s like living a life of luxury! The furniture was provided so I have just added my record player in the corner, plugged in my Xbox (an essential obviously), a reed diffuser from Tesco rested on a slate love heart coaster from Wilko and wrapped my fairy lights underneath the table to make the place more homely. The curtains in the living room are also blackout so perfect for watching films during the afternoon.

Bedroom 1

I mean its my Boyfriend’s room, so I can’t say much apart from the fact that its less decorative, more practical. In his room he has a fitted wardrobe, a chest of drawers and a bedside cabinet.

His Bathroom is bigger than mine, which is the sole reason he chose this room as he is significantly taller. Each bathroom has a toilet, shower, under sink storage, a towel rail, and a ledge with a wall long mirror. This is perfect for getting ready as the spotlights are nice and bright.

My Bedroom

My bedroom on the other hand is more decorative. I thought a light grey duvet cover would go very well with the “IKEA” feel of the flat and add a personal touch with the lace detailing (this is from B&M and was £25.99 by the way). For studying, a throw is one of my essentials so I have used my dark grey throw from Tk Maxx.

I have used a storage box from Tesco (£1.99) to store both my essential makeup on my desk and additional extras in my beside cabinet. And what’s a uni room without fairy lights? These are from Ebay and have lasted both 1st and 2nd year, making an appearance on the third. I have used a mug for my brushes, which is pretty standard for me, and have my diary pride of place ready for when deadlines hit, and a peach and guava room spray. Unlike the other bedroom, instead of a fitted wardrobe, I have a fitted closet, with 2 rails and storage underneath, which is perfect for hanging up jackets, jeans and jumpers.

My Bathroom

This is arranged a little bit differently from Lewis’, purely because I have a smaller shower, so the towel rail has been moved, but quite honestly, this is ample room for one person, and enough storage to fit all my skincare.

We also have the most amazing sky light, with a beautiful view of the local church, exactly what you want to see first thing when we wake up.
