Affirmations for self-care: How To Look After Yourself In Summer

Hey guys! Happy summer! Alongside some amazingly warm days, sometimes there are occasions where we have to put self-care first. Here are my top affirmations for self-care, and why your health and well-being should come first always. This is a huge collaboration with 20 other bloggers, who are absolutely amazing! Thank you to Caroline (Envirolineblog) and Allison (The Nutmeg Diaries) for putting this wonderful idea together. I will insert their links at the bottom of the post – please do check them out!

Stay Hydrated

Hydration can be something we take for granted. Although it is recommended we drink 10 glasses of water a day, most of us do not hit anywhere near that amount. Therefore, when it hits summer, it can be difficult to get into that habit. These affirmations for self-care are health orientated more than anything, as there are many side effects of dehydration:

Symptoms of dehydration in adults and children include:

  • Feeling thirsty
  • Dark yellow and strong-smelling pee
  • Feeling dizzy or lighthead
  • Feeling tired
  • A dry mouth, lips and eyes
  • Peeing little, and fewer than 4 times a day

To manage how much you drink, keep a water bottle near you, and monitor how many times you have to refill it. I bought my Boyfriend a bottle that has a counter on it to measure how many bottles he has had. It is the perfect way to not only measure your fluids, but to know when you have not had enough.

Protect Yourself From The Sun

There are so many misconceptions that sun protection is the enemy for anyone trying to tan. However, sun protection is the best way to protect your skin from those harsh sun rays. There is so much information about not walking your dog in a heatwave – because it can burn them. Our skin cells are the same! Just like we put heat protectant on our hair before straightening, we should always wear sun protection on any exposed part of our body.

This will reduce the likelihood of sun damage and age spots, scars, hyperpigmentation, and ultimately – skin cancer. If you have problematic skin, I would recommend to apply SPF all year around, because the sun is present all year round, and therefore, damage can still be done.

Allow Your Body To Sweat

I know this sounds grim. But sweating is a normal bodily process. The hardest part about summer is maintaining a good body temperature. Sweating helps with this, as it cools down the outer layer of the skin. Deoderant is amazing, and saves us from some awkward times, but wherever possible, try to allow your body to sweat.

Wear Light Clothing

The great thing about summer – you have more fashion freedom. Although this may not be for some, for others, it is a great way to express their style – with bright colours and tassels all the rage. To look after yourself in the sun, try to wear lighter clothing. Cotton is your friend! You do not need to show off every bit of skin if you do not feel comfortable, summer is not for that. The key is to feel comfortable in your own skin, while still enjoying the sun without wearing too many layers.

On that note, self-care in the summer needs a changing up at night too. Try thinner sheets with a high cotton thread count, and wear lighter PJ’s (if any haha). This may make it easier for your body to navigate your temperature, and reduce the chances of late night hot flushes.

Don’t Stop Moisturising!

I have known so many people to do this, and it is a bad habit to get into. Just because you have oily skin, it does not mean that you should quite using moisturiser. Your skin still needs nutrients, and if it is getting the hydration it needs from sweat, then your pores will become a lot more clogged than before. Use a moisturiser for oily skin – and insert blotting papers into your life to manage excess oil. Wherever possible though, stick to your usual cleanse, tone and moiturise routine.

Eat A Recommended Amount

When determining affirmations for self-care, the first thing in my mind is the need for a summer body. In the run up to summer, so many of us restrict what we eat in the need for the “perfect body”. Although we need to keep our fluids up (and it fills us up), it is not a food substitute. Lighter dinners are normal in summer, but ensure that you are still eating your required amount. Summer usually burns more calories (exertion of energy, going out more), so factor that in when thinking about what to eat. Self-care only goes so far if you are abusing your body with food.
