It can be so easy to build up everything in your home to the point where it all gets out of hand. Managing your stuff isn’t always easy when everything has sentimental or a practical value. However, sometimes it becomes necessary to take stock of your life and find out what is actually important. If you are overworked, stressed out and simply have no time for yourself, you have to find ways to make things a little easier. Maybe visual clutter is the problem, and clearing up would help to create a mindset shift. If you don’t, your health may begin to suffer as a result. No one should be on the go all the time. To help you discover ways how to simplify your home, here are a few tips.
Take Stock of Your Finances
Your financial situation plays a huge factor in your overall sense of wellbeing. If you are living well beyond your means, then you are going be falling deeper and deeper into debt. This has to stop. Be honest with yourself and go through your finances. Look at all your incomings and outgoings and try and create a strategy for matching them. Yes, it may mean you have to cut things out or shop at budget superstores, but the more streamlined and simple you can become, the less stress you will feel.
When you have a free hour, try to create a profit and loss chart. I do this, and it is the easiest way to find extra outgoings that I can cut out. Start by finding out how much you spend on regular outgoings/essentials – including gas, electricity, water and food. You may find that these are a lot higher than expected, resulting in a change to a smart meter, or a cheaper supermarket. I also find that I spend less when I am trying to track it. I will make my coffees at home instead, or not buy that blouse I like but didn’t need. The biggest thing you can do for financial freedom is to be the one in control, and physically contemplate and question your household finances.
Start Saying No!
Being a people pleaser will get you nowhere. You will end up used and spent and still expected to go out of your way to help others. You can begin stopping this habit now by using the word ‘No’. it can be a very powerful feeling when you first use it, but when you realise it gives you more time, simplifies and improves your life, it will become rather addictive. It can be so easy to feel overwhelmed with opportunities galore, and so many options pulling you each and every way until you are ready to pop. Read the signs and listen to your body when you know when you need a rest. This means that when you are ready to be back at 100%, you will be gearing and ready to go.

Embrace Minimalism
A minimalist lifestyle can be found in a number of ways. Minimalism is another term for simple living and is a philosophical approach to life to only include things that offer you value. That means you need to reduce the things that do not add value. This can be found by changing a job you hate to something more meaningful. Letting go of those toxic friendships and decluttering your living spaces. By eliminating the random items from your life, you are embracing a freer life, which is more peaceful where you feel as if you are more in control. What you are controlling is the aspects of your life that can change for the better, and minimalism and decluttering is a great way to achieve that.

Be Prepared for Life-Changing Events
Everyone has them, and some we know about in advance and others may come as a total shock. It would help if you could adopt an attitude that life changes and come to terms with that. Nothing stays static, so the sooner you accept that, the easier it will be when something happens, like being made redundant. Other life change events like having a baby, we usually know about months in advance. If you want to make this simpler, then you should start preparing as early as you can. Stock up on essential items which you can find at Foryourlittleone. Save as much money as you can, and ensure you have a strong support network. The more things you can do to prepare for the baby’s arrival, the simpler and easier it will be.

Think About The Scents
A seemingly simple task, but so effective. It is funny how a scent can completely transform the way we see things and take us to a place that makes us feel happy and at peace. Switch it up during season changes, and find scents that you can stand. Trust me, I know the mistake of not – after buying the Mango Salsa Yankee Candle, I found myself hating the smell so quickly and had to suffer for 6 months because of it. Something so simple can be so frustrating! If you don’t know where to start with scent experimentation, start with tealights, votives and wax melts, which will last a few hours instead of 35-50 hours, like a standard candle. Try for fresher scents in summer, and warmer, spicier scents in winter.

Work The Walls
Simplifying your home can be made so much easier if there is less to work with. However, there is no limit when it comes to the walls. Try and create a gallery wall, incorporating memories that are important to you. If an item has a sentimental value, but cannot be kept, try to incorporate your favourite items on the walls, through being framed, to being artistically added between the frames. This is a great way to avoid clutter, but not feel like anything is lost in your home while adding warmth and personalisation to the walls.

A Simple Declutter May Be All You Need
When wondering how to simplify your home, it could quite easily start with simplifying your surroundings. You know the cliche, less is more? Well for some it is, and a clear home certainly can lead to a clear mind. A simple way to instantly transform your home is to have a huge declutter and sort out your organisation in each room. Take the time to work your way through your home and get rid of anything you do not use and aim to have a house declutter every three to six months.
Once you have decluttered, think about ways you can organise your space. For example, you could add shelves to your room or take a look on amazon for some organising tools to allow you to create space in your home you never knew you had.

Mirror Mirror On The Wall
To add to a room, without cluttering it, try and add more mirrors. Mirrors are a great way to allow light into your room, as well as introduce your personal touch. Find ones that suit the room, theme, size and location to create the best look. If you have a smaller room that you want to feel a little bigger, add an oversized mirror to the space. This will create an optical illusion that the space is much larger and will allow the room to capture more natural light. Top tip! Try heated mirrors for bathrooms, so they can be used in all temperatures, and try not to add too many mirrors in the kitchen, as they will steam up every time the kettle is turned on. Not only are they are great room features, but they ensure you are looking great at all times!

Bring the Outdoors Indoors
Investing in some pretty plants and flowers can be an amazing way to furnish your home on a budget. Plants can instantly make a room look beautiful and also have a huge benefit on our well-being. Get Painting
A really simple and inexpensive way to furnish your home on a budget is to get creative and paint your walls. You could change the colour of the room if you fancy a change or simply paint over your existing colour to make your room look brighter and neat. If you are painting a smaller room, try choosing a lighter colour to make the room feel more open. It is the easiest way to simplify your home and strip everything back to basics. Get creative and find a way to create a room that is based on colours that you like, and relax you. If you are a tense person, I would not recommend bright red, because it will always connote danger. Try pastel colours, or white you would like your room completely bright.
Get A Feature Wall
If you are feeling particularly creative, a feature wall can add to a home in an inexpensive, minimalist way. Create a template of the sort of things you like and try and visualise a design. Even if it ends up a massive fail, you can always just paint over it! It can be a really therapeutic way of clearing your mind, as well as having something you created on show.

Keep Your Rooms To One Purpose Only
Using your rooms for multiple reasons can be practical, but it can cause unnecessary clutter and disorganisation. Let’s take a bedroom for example:
This is the only room that does not need to be a multi-purpose room. Your bedroom should only be for you to sleep in; especially if you are trying to get your sleeping pattern established and then stick to it. A cluttered bedroom can interrupt the sleeping process and can change the mindset. The purpose of a bedroom is to switch your brain off completely and relax. This can be extremely difficult to do if you are always doing things in your bedroom. You need to get your brain into the habit of knowing that when you go into your bedroom and go to bed. Wherever you can, reduce screens and bright lights – using dimmers and lamps wherever possible.

Give the Garden a Little Love
In the winter months, it can be easy to get distracted by a view of weeding plants outside, which can cause lots of undue stress. Make your life easy for the winter months, because chances are that you do not want to be weeding in the rain. An essential summer essential item is a hose – keep those plants hydrated! Also perfect for a cheeky dip in the paddling pool when it gets warmer. As soon as it gets warm, try to simplify your home by making your garden as self-sufficient as possible. Consider astroturf or plants that will survive all year round without much maintenance and that do not shed too much – otherwise, the clean up will be more effort than it is worth. Once a year, rent out a pressure washer and maintain any pieces of patio you have – to ensure you do not get any damage in the long run.

Fancy Lamps
Like it was mentioned with mirrors, lamps are best to find during a sale. I went to an Argos clearance warehouse and bought two Habitat touch lamps (retailing at £20) for £5 (fully working). Overall a bargain purchase! Lamps and lighting fixtures can add elegance to a room (if done right), and is a cheap addition too. Not only does it add a light source, but it is great at brightening the home, and adding warmth just when you need it.

Soft Furnishings
Cushions and throws offer the feeling of warmth and comfort, especially when curled up in the living room, so consider purchasing this when decorating your home. This can be the perfect level of comfort after a long and stressful day. Your home should be your haven, and therefore you should try and keep it as cosy as possible.

Keep Things Clean
Obviously, this sounds like a really dumb thing to say – of course, I’m not going to be intentionally dirty? The thing is when there are so many other things that need to be done, having a little clean can get pushed to the bottom of the itinerary. That’s why I suggest prioritising it, putting cleaning at the top of your list and clearing your space of anything you do not need. After all, a clean atmosphere leads to a happy atmosphere, and one of the key ways to organise your life.

Changing Your Beliefs
When you are simplifying your home, try and visualise what you want to achieve and go for it!
I started upgrading my home by renovating it on the cheap. Through this, I decided what I wanted the final product to look like, the levels of warmth and comfort I wanted to portray and where this slots in with my goals and ambitions. If the goal was to add £30,000 to the asking price, I knew I had to put in £2,000 myself (and a lot of elbow grease). 12 months later, 9 rooms later – the house is the way I want it and I have begun to upgrade my home. Through something tangible, I have instilled a belief that I want to better myself. The skills and motivation I have learned through this are priceless.
It’s about the Law of Attraction: visualising what we want and going for it! And when you have that sense of certainty – when you know you can do it, this is what will give you the motivation. If you want something in life, you’ve got to visualise it and believe that you can get there. When you visualise exactly what the final product looks like, you have a better idea of how to plan your steps to get there. By upgrading your beliefs, you will start to put strategies in place to guarantee that you are taking steps in the right direction.

Take Care of Yourself
This is the most important factor. At the end of the day, organising your life is supposed to make your day to day routine easier, not more stressful. As always, health and wellbeing come first, and if it’s all too much, then speak to someone (or delegate tasks if you can).
If you are wondering how to simplify your home, the most important step is to take your time and go at your own pace. If you pressure yourself too much, it will be overwhelming, and the results will always be better over time.
